Abuse Prevention In Oregon, several thousand older citizens and people with disabilities experience abuse or neglect each year. The number may be much higher - many cases are never reported to the proper authorities. Most people have heard about abuse in care facilities. Many are surprised to learn that abuse also takes place in homes. Like other forms of abuse and neglect, such as child abuse and domestic violence, the abuser is often someone close to the victim. Abuse of the elderly and other vulnerable adults is never okay. In many cases the abuse is a criminal action that can be prosecuted by local, state and even federal authorities. Report suspected cases of abuse to your local DHS or AAA office. You may also report abuse to DHS at 1-800-232-3020. In an emergency, call 911. For more information about abuse, and what to do if you believe you or someone you know is being abused or neglected, visit the Oregon Department of Human Services Web page. |
